Another project off the list

Yeah! Now that the weather is finally warming up I can start checking projects off that long list.

The latest one off the list is a shelving unit in the bedroom.

The shelves and uprights are slotted so everything fits together. Three brackets hold it to the wall so I don't get a rude awakening in the middle of the night with a set of shelves suddenly on top of me.

You can't really tell it from the photo, but the shelves are made from a composite style wood that looks vaguely like butcher block. The wood is stained with a clear stain.

The most unusual part, I guess, is that the wood is not cut on a straight line. The walls in the bedroom are not on perfect right angles. This particular corner is an obtuse angle. (Remember your geometry class folks?)

I cut the shelves from 12-inches wide on the left to 10 inches wide on the right. This counters the angle of the wall so that the bed can sit square with the wall on the right.

I installed small pot lights under the shelves for reading in bed. (I saved them from some shelving I took apart before moving from the old house. Unfortunately, the light on the left has burned out but you can see how the other two work.) The lights are kinda cool, they turn on with a simple touch pad.

Finally, this bed is a queen size. I made the "legs" so that they fit on either side of the bed. However, if I decide to go to a king size at some point in the future, it will fit to the edges of the shelves. So, whatever size bed I have, I won't have to alter the shelving.

I wasn't too excited about it when I first finished it but after a little altering and once I started to get some pieces on it, it's growing on me. I still have to do some more "decorating" to it and the different size spaces allow for a lot of possibilities which was part of the plan.

Now, the next project is to finish the stairs to the bedroom loft. The contractor is working on them right now.
